The back story

About Fredrikstad: the back story

Fredrikstad’s fortified town, Gamlebyen, was founded in 1567 by King Frederik II, on the east bank of the river Glomma, across from the modern centre; it is still lived in, with artisans, galleries and cafés inside its ramparts, and a city ferry links it with the town centre (visitfredrikstadhvaler.com). Beyond lie the islands of Hvaler.

Getting there

By Vy train from Oslo S; check the timetable on vy.no.

The old town

Walk the ramparts and moats of the fortified town, founded in 1567, and take the city ferry across the Glomma to the centre.

Check vy.no for trains from Oslo S to Fredrikstad.

Our advice: combine the old town with an afternoon on the islands of Hvaler in summer.
